We all want to be happy. Well, everyone except Bob. No… not you, Bob. The other Bob.

The rest of us want to be happy. We like to be happy. We kind of focus our lives around it. Very few of us, when approached with the opportunity to do something we hate say, “This will suck. I’m in!”

Unlike Bob (no, the other one), we enjoy enjoying. We are happy to be happy. We like liking what we are doing. It’s just the way we’re built.

So if you want to be happy, don’t miss an opportunity for this one thing – the thing that science tells us will make us happy.

It’s Science

The Journal of Social Psychology and the Journal of Happiness Studies both found out the science. It’s recorded in the Greater Good Magazine at Berkley.

If you want to have a life full of happiness, don’t miss an opportunity for this one thing: kindness. Doing something nice for others makes us happy. In fact, it’s not that challenging to find happiness when we show kindness.

In the first study by the Journal of Social Psychology, simply one act of kindness a day for ten days boosted participants happiness. In the other study by the Journal of Happiness Studies, researchers found that people felt a stronger sense of happiness when they remembered buying something for someone else over buying something for themselves. 

This shows that not only does kindness make us feel better, its effects stay with us for longer.

Don’t Miss an Opportunity

If you want to be happy, then when you see a chance, don’t miss an opportunity for this one thing: sharing kindness.

Life is full of opportunities to be kind to yourself. But if you really want to be good to yourself then find an opportunity to be kind to others. You may be surprised to discover that you’re not only happier, but that the happiness lasts longer.
